For NYE this year, I decided to revisit one of my favorite places on this planet, the MV World Odyssey. The ship that I spent a semester abroad on for the life-changing Semester at Sea (SAS) program! But, as news outlets and social media began to flood my ears and eyes about the Omicron variant, a crazy idea popped into my mind. What if I were to get stuck onboard the ship? My immediate thought was, “hell yeah, that means I could run one of my Project 30 runs on the ship!” Then I thought, ”wait, why not just run one on the ship anyways?”
So with that thought planted in my mind, I have decided that I will run my first Project 30 run on the ship! A quick Google search told me that the ship is about 590 feet long and with the help of some of my back of the napkin calculations, I believe that I will have to run just under 160 laps around the ship in order to get my 30 miles in. So this run will have some added challenges to the run. I have become extremely accustomed to running a trail where every step takes me to a new place (at least until I reach my turnaround point). But, running on the ship will take away that beautiful luxury I’ve become accustomed to. Another added challenge will be running on a moving ship. I certainly haven’t trained to be running on moving ground, so that will be an interesting change.
One potential obstacle for this running location will be the rules that the SAS ship crew ultimately have. It may be the case that I actually cannot run on the decks of the ship. While this would be very unfortunate, there is an alternative, albeit not one that I am particularly excited about. The alternative would be to use of the treadmills that they have onboard. Whatever ends up being possible, I fully intend on making this unique location my first Project 30 run because I think it’s an amazingly rare opportunity and it’s one I am excited to seize!
Luckily either way, I will be going onto the ship with some great friends. Friends who have already agreed to help me accomplish this crazy task. With the support of friends to run some of the laps with me, I believe that the added challenges will be somewhat negated by the chance to run socially with the help of some friends!
